Ribbon Cutting

HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Cincinnati at Norwood held a grand opening ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 4 with hospital tours and an official ribbon cutting ceremony. More than 200 guests were in attendance to celebrate the hospital opening, including two former patients who shared their personal stories of receiving therapy at the HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Cincinnati located on the Drake campus.

The First Lady of the City of Norwood Mary Ann Williams had a stroke approximately two years ago. After hospitalization, she was transferred to HealthSouth Cincinnati. She came into the inpatient rehabilitation hospital not able to walk; and in less than three weeks, Mary Ann was walking and back home.

“Without the skilled nursing, the physical, occupational and speech therapy, I wouldn’t be the person I am today,” remarked Williams. “They taught me how to do everything.”

In April 2013, Brad Fahrenkamp, a financial advisor, husband and father of two young boys, endured a series of three ischemic strokes and a brain bleed that almost cost him his life at the young age of 40. Eighty percent of the left side of his body and his right vocal cord were paralyzed as a result of the stroke. Upon being transferred to HealthSouth Cincinnati, he could not sit up or stand and could barely see or speak. Fahrenkamp credits the clinicians and staff at HealthSouth Cincinnati for helping him get home to his family and regain the ability to swim, coach soccer, get back to work and even take helicopter flying lessons.

“The people made the difference,” said Fahrenkamp. “That’s what makes the difference between a good and great place – how they treated me and how they came out to support me.”

In addition, the presentation included remarks from HealthSouth Corporation CEO Jay Grinney, Norwood Mayor Thomas Williams, University of Cincinnati Division Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Dr. Lester Duplechan and HealthSouth of Cincinnati CEO Brad Kennedy.

“I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to not only have this rehabilitation hospital here but to have HealthSouth here which we’ve had personal experience with,” said Mayor Williams. “Unless you have been a patient, it’s hard to explain just how crucial this service is.”
